Kelpi is a forward-thinking company based in Bristol, dedicated to providing sustainable alternatives to traditional plastic packaging using seaweed based materials.

Their commitment to sustainability has placed them at the forefront of the movement to tackle plastic pollution, with a vision to scale their technology to meet the demands of industries worldwide.

Kelpi's Story
The Challenge

Kelpi’s goal of growing its seaweed-based packaging technology from small-scale prototypes to large-scale commercial production presented several challenges. Transitioning from lab-based prototypes to mass production required major changes in manufacturing processes. Maintaining the high quality and consistency of their seaweed-based materials during large-scale production was vital. They needed advanced manufacturing solutions and digital tools to support their growth and keep up with increasing demand. In addition to these technical challenges, Kelpi recognised the importance of incorporating digital technologies to optimise operations, increase productivity, and reduce waste.

The Solution

Seeking support, Kelpi engaged with the Made Smarter programme, which provided access to a range of resources tailored to their needs including a 1:1 assessment with the National Composite Centre (NCC) and a grant of up to £20,000.

To kick off their support, Kelpi had an in-depth assessment with the NCC where experts identified areas that could benefit from digitalisation. This resulted in a detailed digital transformation plan, which included recommendations for technologies to automate and optimise production, ensuring scalability, for advanced manufacturing systems. The NCC recommended tools to track and improve production processes, maintain product quality, and reduce energy consumption. They also advised what technologies were available to help them improve visibility and efficiency across the supply chain.

The NCC recommended Kelpi apply for the grant scheme offered by Made Smarter, giving them the funding they need to purchase the equipment highlighted in the 1:1 sessions.

The Benefits

By embracing the recommendations provided through the Made Smarter programme and utilising the grant to introduce the new technologies, Kelpi achieved significant advancements in their business. The team were able to purchase digital tools which helped optimise production schedules, reduce downtime, and ensure smoother operations, leading to increased operational efficiency.

The integration of digital monitoring allowed Kelpi to maintain consistent product quality and meet strict industry standards. With optimised production and better control over manufacturing processes, Kelpi was able to scale up more quickly and bring their sustainable packaging to market faster.

Digitalisation helped reduce material waste and energy consumption, supporting their commitment to environmental sustainability. Through the adoption of cutting-edge digital technologies, Kelpi gained a competitive advantage in the rapidly evolving market for eco-friendly packaging solutions. These improvements not only helped Kelpi meet their environmental objectives but also positioned them as an innovative leader in the packaging industry.

The Future

Kelpi’s success with Made Smarter is a prime example of how adopting digital technologies can drive business growth while promoting sustainability. With the foundations laid for large-scale production, Kelpi is now poised to expand its impact. Kelpi plans to explore new applications for their seaweed-based materials, including packaging for a wider range of products across various industries. They are committed to continuing their digital transformation by incorporating even more advanced technologies into their manufacturing processes. Kelpi is working towards further reducing its environmental footprint by leveraging digital tools to minimise waste and maximise resource efficiency.

With a strong digital foundation in place, they are well-positioned to grow and contribute to the global movement against plastic pollution.
