For many manufacturers, digital transformation can feel like something that's meant for larger businesses with bigger budgets and dedicated IT teams. But that's one of the biggest myths Lucy Cross is keen to challenge.

As a Digital Transformation Specialist with Made Smarter West Midlands, Lucy works with manufacturers across Greater Birmingham and Solihull, helping businesses of all sizes identify practical opportunities to improve efficiency, boost productivity and unlock sustainable growth through technology.

In this short blog, Lucy explains that digital transformation doesn't have to start with a major investment. Productivity gains can come from incremental, well-planned changes that solve everyday challenges.

Digital transformation is about using technology to improve everyday operations, making processes more efficient, productive and data-driven whilst reducing overall waste and cost.

It could be introducing better data collection, streamlining manual processes or improving communication between teams - digital transformation should always deliver clear benefits that support business objectives.

For manufacturers facing increasing pressures around productivity, costs and workforce challenges, even small, low-cost digital improvements can make a significant difference to profitability.

Many of the manufacturers who approach Made Smarter already know there are opportunities to improve their operations, but they aren't always sure where to begin and they understand that accessing specialist support at an early stage can save a lot of pain and unnecessary cost in the long run.

I work closely with businesses to help them identify areas where technology can support growth, efficiency and productivity. Together with our strategic partners at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and WMG at the University of Warwick, we explore practical solutions before creating a plan that aligns with the company's goals and available resources.

This combination of expert advice, strategic planning, access to wider specialist networks, skills and change management support, and grant funding to implement digital tools, helps manufacturers to approach digital transformation with confidence.

Lucy goes on to explain that one of the most common barriers to digital transformation is the perception that it requires a major investment from day one and that it's only, therefore, possible for large businesses.

Lucy reassures businesses that this simply isn't the case.

It's always worth having a chat with us, whether you're a small engineering business or a larger, established, manufacturer. What matters most is not the size of the company but the willingness to embrace change and commit to improvement.

And the best transformations often start small and can begin with simple internal changes that deliver quick and measurable benefits.

Automating repetitive administrative tasks, digitising paperwork, or improving visibility of production data can free up valuable time across the business.

In many cases, relieving employees of routine tasks allows them to focus on more meaningful, value-add work that supports growth and innovation.

While funding and project support are important elements of Made Smarter, Lucy also highlights the long-term value of developing a digital roadmap.

The digital roadmap forms part of a wider digital strategy, helping businesses look beyond immediate projects and focus on their future ambitions.

Every roadmap is different, but a strong digital roadmap will typically help the client to prioritise investments effectively, align their technology with their business objectives, help them to make informed decisions about future growth, and stay competitive in an evolving marketplace.

Rather than making reactive decisions, manufacturers can use the roadmaps to help them build a clear and achievable path towards long-term success.

For Lucy, some of the most rewarding success stories are those where digital transformation creates wider benefits for the business and its people.

A project that particularly stands out to me involved a manufacturer that combined Made Smarter grant support with a Made Smarter internship and, together, these initiatives helped the business achieve significant growth.

That company is now planning a move into a larger dedicated manufacturing facility in addition to retaining its existing premises, to accommodate increasing demand, and one of the interns who contributed to the project's success secured a permanent role with the business.

It was a great example of how digital transformation can create opportunities not only for operational growth but also for workforce development and skills retention, and it is this sort of success story that makes my role so rewarding.

In fact, recruitment challenges and skills gaps in manufacturing are actively addressed through Made Smarter, with Lucy highlighting the important role digital adoption can play in addressing these challenges:

Automation and digital transformation often help address skills gaps by automating mundane processes. This allows businesses to create more relevant and appealing roles, helping attract new talent into manufacturing.

And by enabling employees to focus on higher-value activities, manufacturers can improve both productivity and workforce engagement, reducing staff turnover.

Of course, every manufacturer's journey is different, and outcomes will vary depending on their starting point and ambitions. However, businesses who adopt digital tools and processes typically see improvements in:

  • Productivity

  • Operational efficiency

  • Capacity

  • Profitability

  • Decision-making

  • Business resilience

These improvements often create the space needed for companies to focus on strategic growth rather than day-to-day firefighting.
