Position Overview

Responsible for redesigning work instructions, collecting video and visual data, embedding APQP and control plan logic, and building a repeatable digital process for Nordell.

The Business:

Nordell proposes the creation of a fully integrated digital quality system that connects APQP, Control Plans, Failure Modes and digital work instructions into one coherent, high-performing operational framework.

Although Nordell already uses digital work instructions, they lack consistency, robust failure-mode content, and operator adoption. This project transforms those assets into a best-in-class system by embedding APQP logic, control plans and visual, video-supported operator instructions.

A dedicated Digital Manufacturing Intern, part-funded via the Made Smarter South East programme, will support Engineering, Quality and Production in creating standardised, scalable digital instructions that reduce scrap, improve consistency, accelerate training and provide strong ISO evidence.

What you’ll be doing:
Nordell is investing in a major digital transformation project to strengthen our manufacturing processes, improve quality control and enhance operator training. We are looking for a Digital Manufacturing Intern to lead the development of video-enhanced work instructions, rebuild control plans and support the integration of APQP into our operational workflow.

This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you’ll work closely with Engineering, Quality and Production teams to build a modern, data-driven operator support system.

  • Review and standardise existing APQP documentation
  • Support the development of robust Control Plans for selected products
  • Capture video footage and photographs of manufacturing processes and failure modes
  • Build video-enhanced digital work instructions using Nordell’s existing platforms
  • Create a visual defect library linked to failure modes and control actions
  • Ensure all operator instructions align with APQP and Control Plan requirements
  • Work with operators to test, validate and improve instruction formats
  • Support the rollout of digital training and competency tracking
  • Assist in measuring improvements in scrap, consistency and training time

What you’ll gain:

  • Exposure to real-world manufacturing in a fast-growing engineering business
  • Hands-on experience with digital work instruction systems
  • First-hand understanding of quality systems including APQP and Control Plans
  • Practical problem-solving skills and process improvement experience
  • A strong addition to your CV in digital manufacturing and industrial engineering

About you:

  • Currently studying disciplines in Computing, Artificial Intelligence or project management, Advanced Manufacturing Systems & Technology, Internet of Things or Engineering
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of APQP, FMEA or Control Plans
  • Comfortable gathering and organising visual content (photos/videos)
  • Strong digital skills with an interest in Industry 4.0
  • Confident communicator able to engage with shop-floor teams
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and with cross-functional team

This is a hands-on role where you’ll work closely with our permanent team and gain valuable industry experience.
