The Business:
Woven Bio is a sustainable materials company developing high-performance bio-composite packaging designed to replace expanded polystyrene (EPS). Using natural fibres and bio-based binders, the company produces lightweight, protective packaging solutions that deliver equivalent performance to EPS while significantly reducing environmental impact.

Founded by former McLaren Formula 1 composites engineer Rob Allen, Woven Bio combines advanced composite engineering with scalable manufacturing to help manufacturers transition away from fossil-based packaging.

What you’ll be doing:
The intern will play a key role in supporting Woven Bio’s transition to a digitally enabled manufacturing operation. Tasks will combine engineering, data analysis, and digital systems development.

Core Responsibilities Include

  • Map manufacturing processes and identify digitalisation opportunities
  • Develop production data capture systems (e.g. materials, temperature, pressure, cycle times)
  • Build dashboards using tools such as Excel, Power BI or Python
  • Analyse production data to identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks and waste
  • Support CAD design of tooling, fixtures, and manufacturing equipment
  • Assist with optimisation of moulding and pressing processes
  • Evaluate sensor technologies, IoT systems and machine monitoring solutions

What you’ll gain:
This internship offers hands-on experience in a fast-growing, innovation-led manufacturing business.

Key Benefits Include:

  • Practical experience in digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0
  • Exposure to real-world manufacturing scale-up challenges
  • Experience in CAD design and mechanical engineering
  • Development of data analytics and visualisation skills

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the internship, you will have:

  • Developed production data capture and monitoring tools
  • Contributed to process improvement and optimisation projects
  • Designed or supported improvements to manufacturing equipment
  • Created dashboards and performance reporting systems
  • Delivered a digital manufacturing roadmap and final report
