Digital Internship Opportunity: Systems Design and Implementation Planning for a Pressurised Ingredient Delivery System
Reference Number: 5783
Start Date: ASAP
Location: Lancashire

Project Goals and Objectives

The internship will:

  • Design a robust pressurised delivery system for ingredients
  • Ensure accurate, repeatable automated dosing
  • Minimise cross-contamination risk
  • Enable high-throughput operation
  • Provide a scalable architecture for a 1000-ingredient library
  • Coordinate and technically manage existing suppliers to ensure integrated system delivery
  • The outcome will be an implementation-ready engineering package, not just a concept.

Scope of Work

  • Process & System Requirements Definition
    • Characterise fluid properties of ingredients (viscosity range, density, volatility, compatibility)
    • Define required dosing accuracy and speed
    • Establish operating pressures and safe limits
    • Define cleaning/purge requirements
    • Confirm environmental and safety considerations

Deliverable: Process design brief

  • Pressurised Delivery System Design
    • From a systems/chemical engineering perspective, the intern will:
      • Select and Justify Delivery Method Evaluate and specify the pressure vessels, manifolds, delivery lines, pressure regulation, and any other required equipment.
      • Perform Engineering Calculations Complete the calculations to ensure the specification is fit for purpose and will function correctly, with the appropriate safety factors and considerations.

Deliverable: Engineering calculations and equipment specification

  • System Architecture & Integration
    • Develop a complete high-level design which may include:
    • Process flow diagram
    • Pipe design
    • Control philosophy for pressurised dosing
    • Interlock and fail-safe logic requirements
    • Integration points with other system elements

Deliverable: Integrated System Architecture Document

  • Risk Assessment and Safety Engineering
    • Conduct structured analysis including:
    • Overpressure scenarios
    • Line rupture / leak risk
    • Air entrainment risks
    • Cross-contamination between ingredients
    • Cleaning and purge risks
    • Operator exposure risks Method: DRA and/or FMEA.

Deliverable: Design Risk Assessment Report

  • Project Management and Supplier Coordination
    • The intern will support project delivery by
      • Translating engineering requirements into technical specifications for each supplier
      • Coordinating technical input between all suppliers
      • Identifying interface risks and responsibility gaps
      • Creating a RACI matrix
      • Facilitating review meetings
      • Developing an implementation timeline including:

Deliverable: Integrated project plan

Intern Role

The intern will act as:

  • Process/System Design Engineer
  • Technical integrator between suppliers
  • Engineering project coordinator They will not be fabricating equipment or coding PLC software, but will define the technical requirements those suppliers must deliver against.

Skills Required Essential

  • Chemical Engineering or Process Engineering background
  • Fluid dynamics and pressure system calculations
  • Understanding of pumps, valves and piping systems
  • Structured engineering documentation capability
  • Basic project management competence

Desirable:

  • Experience in small-batch process industries
  • Familiarity with automated dosing systems
  • Awareness of industrial safety standards
