Project Goals and Objectives
Blackburn-based plastics engineering and manufacturing SME employing 26 people. The business delivers a diverse mix of work, ranging from small, one-off plastic fabrication jobs through to large cutting steel orders and CNC-machined plastic components. As order complexity and variety increase, the business relies on multiple software systems and manual processes to manage quoting, order handling, production coordination, and administration. This internship will support in creating clarity in the business and establishing strong digital foundations to improve office efficiency and future scalability.
Specific objectives are to:
- Gain a clear, business-wide view of all software systems currently in use
- Capture and rationalise end-to-end processes for different product types
- Identify duplication, inefficiencies, and system gaps Assess which systems are fit for purpose and which require updating or replacement
- Agree a practical, phased improvement plan with the leadership team
Intern Skills Required
The intern will have:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Confidence in process mapping and documentation
- Understanding of business software systems (ERP, MRP, job tracking, spreadsheets)
- Good communication skills and the ability to engage with non-technical staff
- A practical, improvement-focused mindset
Intern Roles and Responsibilities
The intern will:
- Lead the documentation of current systems and processes
- Produce clear, easy-to-understand visual maps and summaries
- Analyse alignment between processes and software tools Identify improvement opportunities and quick wins
- Present findings and recommendations to the Managing Director
- Support early implementation or pilot improvements where agreed
- The intern will report directly to the Managing Director, ensuring strong engagement and rapid decision-making.
