Business Overview
Acrastyle Ltd is a long-established engineering and manufacturing business specialising in high-voltage substation protection and control equipment. As the business continues to grow and modernise its operations, there is a clear opportunity to improve how data and systems support testing, stock management and decision-making. This internship will support Acrastyle’s digital transformation journey by introducing practical automation, improving data visibility, and preparing the business for the future adoption of an SAP ERP system. The project aligns strongly with Made Smarter’s aim to help manufacturing SMEs adopt digital technologies in a practical, low-risk way. 

Projects Goals and Objectives

Specific objectives are to:

  • Improve stock accuracy and reduce excess inventory o Design and pilot a weight-based stock replenishment approach that triggers action when bins reach a defined minimum level. Consider RFID tags.
  • Improve data visibility for decision-making o Identify key data points and present them through simple dashboards or structured reporting views displayed on new screens throughout the site.
  • Automate the tracking of metalwork orders o Develop a shared list of purchase orders with each of Acrastyle’s metalwork suppliers that is automatically populated & notifies key personnel when key data is updated. 

Intern Skills Required

 The intern will have: 

  •  Data analysis and data modelling skills
  • Understanding of automation concepts and systems integration
  •  Basic knowledge of databases, dashboards and reporting tools
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Interest in manufacturing and engineering environments

Intern Roles and Responsibilities

The intern will:

  • Engage with staff to understand stock control and supplier ordering challenges
  • Design and prototype digital solutions to improve stock visibility
  • Develop automated stock monitoring and reporting tools
  • Build dashboards to support operational decision-making
  • Support the implementation of an automated metalwork order tracking process
  • Produce clear, practical documentation to support handover
  • Work closely with the day-to-day supervisor to ensure outcomes are usable and realistic
