Digital Design & Manufacturing Internship (Furniture & CNC) This internship gives you hands-on experience helping a long-established UK furniture manufacturer modernise how sofa frames are designed and made.
You’ll be working at the point where 3D CAD design meets real workshop production, helping turn existing furniture designs into repeatable, optimised digital assets that can be manufactured using CNC and traditional woodworking methods.
What you’ll work on:
- Converting existing sofa frame designs into accurate 3D CAD models
- Taking designs from screen to shop floor, testing them through CNC production
- Building a digital catalogue of frame designs with clear file structures
- Refining designs based on what works best in manufacturing
- Documenting clear, repeatable design-to-manufacture processes
- Researching and comparing CNC and traditional woodworking equipment
- Presenting practical recommendations
Key responsibilities & deliverables
- Review and improve existing digital frame designs
- Create new 3D CAD models for priority furniture frames
- Support the production of frames using CNC and woodworking machinery
- Maintain version control and organised design files
- Produce simple, clear process documentation
- Share improvement ideas backed by hands-on testing
Skills & experience needed
- Strong 3D CAD skills (ideally Master’s level or equivalent experience)
- Experience with tools like SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360 or similar
- Ability to document work clearly and explain technical ideas
- A practical, problem-solving mindset with attention to detail
- Interest in furniture design, woodworking or joinery
- Curiosity about CNC machines and hands-on making
