Digital Internship Opportunity: Building a Digital Pattern Library and Visualising the Future Factory
Reference Number: 0010682
Start Date: ASAP
Location: Lancashire
Innovative Outdoor Products is shifting from manual, paper-based production methods to a streamlined, digitally enabled manufacturing process. This project supports that transition by converting physical legacy patterns into CNC-ready digital files and creating a virtual model of the company’s proposed new factory layout. The goal is to improve efficiency, enable better planning, and prepare for future automation investment.
What you’ll be working on:
- Digitise cardboard and plastic cutting patterns into CNC-compatible DXF files.
- Create a structured, searchable digital asset library categorised by SKU and material.
- Build a proof-of-concept 3D model of the planned new factory site using scanned equipment and spatial data.
- Simulate production flows to inform layout optimisation and investment decisions.
- Methods and Tools Pattern Conversion: Use Alphacam, Fusion 360, Rhino, or Inkscape for digitisation.
- Library Development: Apply consistent file naming, versioning, and classification.
- 3D Scanning: Use Polycam or Luma AI to capture existing machinery and assets.
- Factory Layout Modelling: Develop virtual layouts in SketchUp, Twinmotion, or Unreal Engine.
- VR Walkthrough: Create an immersive presentation to support senior decision-making.
Timeline and Milestones
Week Milestone:
- 1–2 Project orientation; choose digitisation approach; scanning plan
- 3–4 Start pattern conversion; scan key machinery
- 5–6 Build first VR layout; finalise CNC-ready pattern library
- 7–8 Present layout simulation; internal review and process documentation.
Intern Responsibilities
- Convert physical patterns into usable digital files for CNC.
- Use scanning and CAD tools to model the existing factory assets.
- Construct and present a digital layout of the new facility.
- Record methods and results to support future expansion and upskilling.
