About The Business: K&D Joinery is a well-established London-based bespoke joinery manufacturer, producing high-quality timber windows, doors, staircases, cabinetry (internal joinery) and specialist joinery products for commercial clients, developers, architects, contractors and private customers. Established in 1984, the business operates one of the UK's larger bespoke joinery manufacturing facilities, with significant investment in CNC machinery, CAD design capabilities and modern production equipment.
Overview: As part of its continued growth, K&D Joinery is exploring the implementation of ERP to support a more connected and data-driven operating model across the business. The system is being considered to help integrate key functions including sales, customer relationship management, project management, production planning, operational services and business reporting. You will work closely with leadership, office staff and workshop teams to understand how work currently flows through the organisation. The role would suit a master's student or final-year undergraduate.
Desirable Skills: Experience or knowledge of process mapping tools such as Miro, Lucidchart, Visio, Draw.io or similar. An interest in ERP, CRM or business management systems, particularly manufacturing-focused solutions such as ERP, Microsoft Dynamics, SAP or similar platforms. Understanding of Lean, continuous improvement or business process improvement principles.
Job Description:
This internship focuses on supporting K&D Joinery to assess, map and improve workflows across the business as it prepares for the potential implementation of an ERP system.
The intern will not be expected to implement ERP alone. Instead, the role will focus on business analysis, workflow mapping, ERP readiness and practical process improvement, helping the company gather and structure the information needed to support successful implementation.
They will collaborate with a K&D colleague who will eventually serve as the primary advocate and business owner for the ERP platform.
Key responsibilities include:
- Mapping current workflows across estimating, sales, design, project management, production, installation and business administration.
- Shadowing and engaging with staff across the business to understand how work is currently planned, communicated, manufactured and delivered.
- Documenting the end-to-end customer journey, from enquiry, quotation and design through to manufacturing, finishing, delivery and installation.
- Identifying key handover points, process dependencies, bottlenecks, duplicated activities and manual administrative tasks.
- Capturing the information and data that will be required for a future ERP system, including customers, suppliers, projects, products, materials, production stages, resource requirements, deadlines and reporting needs.
- Creating clear "as-is" process maps that accurately reflect how the business currently operates.
- Supporting the development of improved "to-be" workflows that align with best practice and future ERP-enabled ways of working.
- Identifying practical efficiency improvements, quick wins and opportunities for greater digitalisation across the business.
- Supporting the creation of ERP readiness and process improvement roadmap, including priorities, responsibilities, risks, dependencies and recommended next steps.
- Assisting with the definition of key business reporting requirements, including project status, workload planning, production capacity, lead times, delivery performance and operational visibility.
- Producing clear documentation, workflow diagrams and process guides that can be used by management, staff and future ERP implementation partners.
- Developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for key business functions to support consistency, training, quality management and future system adoption.
- Providing recommendations on how information can flow more effectively between office, design, production and installation teams to improve visibility and operational coordination.
Essential Skills:
- Postgraduate or final-year undergraduate students studying Business Analysis, Operations Management, Project Management, Business Systems, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Manufacturing Management or a related discipline.
- Strong interest in digital transformation, ERP systems and business process improvement.
- Good understanding of business operations, workflows and project coordination.
- Confident communicating with different teams and translating discussions into clear and structured documentation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills.
- Ability to map business processes and identify inefficiencies or opportunities for improvement.
- Good written communication skills, with the ability to produce structured reports, process maps, SOPs and handover documentation.
- Comfortable working within a manufacturing environment and engaging with both office and workshop teams.
- Good spreadsheet skills and confidence working with business information and data.
- Ability to use initiative, ask insightful questions and work independently with appropriate guidance.
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to gathering and organising information.
Preferred skills:
