Digital Internship Opportunity: CAD Engineering Intern

Duration: Flexible between 8-12 weeks
Location: North Shields

We’re seeking a CAD Engineering Intern to join our team. You’ll use SolidWorks to create and refine detailed fabrication 
drawings, support production planning with Statii software for scheduling and project tracking, and contribute ideas on how we 
can introduce AI-driven process improvements into our engineering operations.
This is an ideal role for a Northumbria University student who wants real-world, hands-on experience in an SME manufacturing environment and is excited to see how advanced tools and modern workflows improve traditional fabrication.

What you’ll be working on:

  • Produce and edit detailed 2D and 3D SolidWorks models and drawings for fabrication
  • Collaborate with our fabrication engineers on design-for manufacture improvements
  • Use Statii software to view project details and assist with scheduling/planning,
  • Contribute ideas to improve this system.
  • Support estimators in preparing accurate, production-ready drawings for customer quotes
  • Help manage and standardise our CAD files and template libraries
  • Contribute ideas on implementing AI processes to streamline engineering operations

What we're looking for:

  • Currently studying Mechanical, Manufacturing, Product Design, or a related Engineering discipline
  • Sound appreciation of in SolidWorks is essential, although more intricate design features can be taught if the candidate has the ability.
  • Interest in modern manufacturing software (e.g. Statii) and digital workflows
  • Curiosity about AI applications in engineering and willingness to explore new ideas
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to discuss technical details clearly for both internal and external customers
  • A proactive, detail-oriented mindset and a willingness to learn

Outcome:

By the end of this placement, you will have:

  • Gained hands-on experience producing professional-grade SolidWorks drawings for real fabrication projects.
  • Developed an understanding of design-for-manufacture principles in metal fabrication.
  • Learned to navigate and support scheduling and planning in Statii manufacturing software.
  • Contributed to standardising and managing a live CAD library in an operational business.
  • Explored practical ideas for applying AI to improve engineering workflows.
  • Built communication skills by collaborating with engineers, estimators, and management in a busy SME environment
  • Gained a strong, real-world foundation to support your future career in mechanical or manufacturing engineering

Skills required

  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks (2D and 3D modelling)
  • Understanding of basic engineering drawing standards and tolerances
  • Interest in manufacturing processes and design-for-manufacture principles
  • Ability to learn and work with planning software (e.g. Statii)
  • Curiosity about AI applications in engineering
  • Good communication skills for discussing technical details with
